Our Research
The Prenni Laboratory values collaborative interdisciplinary research.
We bring excellence in analytical expertise and infrastructure to team science efforts focused on addressing critical challenges in agriculture and food science.
Major themes of our collaborative projects include:
Standardizing the way we analyze food
Our lab is part of the Periodic Table of Food Initiative (PTFI) where we are developing standardized advanced analytical approaches and centralized data processing tools to catalog the biomoelcular composition of the worlds food supply.

Advancing Analytical Science
Many important chemical constituents of samples are hard to measure, and analytical data is often hard to interpret. We develop and refine analytical methods to accurately identify (and in some cases quantify) diverse analytes of interest in a broad range of sample matrices. We also draw on our collective expertise to innovate rigorous data analysis workflows that provide confidence in the results we report.
Investigating the intersection between food and human health
We utilize nontargeted metabolomics to study how the phytochemical composition of our food influences the gut microbiome in the context of human health.
Exploring the linkage between plants and the soil microbiome
We study how agricultural crops communicate and modulate the soil microbiome through root exudation. Ultimately this research provides an important first step towards the development of precision agriculture, supporting sustainable agricultural practices which safeguard valuable ecosystem services
